The General Dental Council, which has a statutory base not too dissimilar from that of the RCVS, is to be radically transformed. Currently, like the RCVS Council, it has a mix of elected and appointed members, with representatives from the dental schools and the chief dental officers of the four countries within the UK. Under plans put forward recently, the new council will have a total of 23 members (about half the present number), with 12 to be elected from within the profession and 11 "lay people". there has been no decision yet on how the lay people are to be appointed. The chief dental officers will have observer status and will lose their voting rights. (report from Veterinary Times 5th Feb 2001). "Dental Council does not look independent."
The General Medical Council has acknowledged the need for more transparency of its complaints proceedings in order to comply with the Human Rights Act 1998. In particular complaints to the GMC should be heard publicly unless there is some special and sufficient reason to the contrary.
